Nottingham was shook this morning by the news that Nottingham Forest manager Luke Higgins had handed over his resignation letter and headed for a new challenge at Division Two outfit Fulham. Higgins had under-gone the post at Nottingham Forest for the last 4 seasons, delivering promotion, followed by Premier League stability and eventually a run in the Inter-toto cup. Higgins has always been known and recognised for his subtlety in the game, and his growing reputation for seeking the challenge rather than the money, this demenour has proven the case once again. He has sacrificed a pay-cut and dropped down two divisions to under-take what he believes to be an " exiciting task ahead " at Fulham FC. He said the following,
" Sometimes in football you reach a stage where you think you've peaked with your capabilities with the ingredients you have on the table, that was my mentality at Nottingham Forest. I'm not in the game for the money, the publicity or the badge of honour, I'm in here to deliver success to teams, and to me the task ahead at Fulham is precisely what I was after. 2 days ago I was manager of Nottingham Forest, a team competeing for European football, a team full of multi-million pound players with ego's and bonuses, now I'm in the depths of the lower leagues, working with players who still have their boots cleaned by their parents, and are barely qualified to cook my dinner, but that's the different levels you find yourself out in this industry, and it's a slow process of trying to upgrade. "
Higgins arrived at Fulham to be greeted with the following dilemma's, no transfer funds available, and debts mounting as high as 2 million, oh, and 1 recognised goalkeeper at the club.
" I sat down with my assistant manager last-night and compiled a list of players we aimed to bring to Fulham in a bid to strengthen and progress, following a brief meeting with the Chairman, I concluded that the financial state would mean my list of transfer targets were about as useful as a Chocolate Radiator, at least the Paper Shredder I stole from Nottingham Forest reaped its uses. "
Higgins's men travel to Leyton Orient in 3 days time, and as it stands, this debt-ridden club can barely muster a squad together. But lest we forget, Higgins thrives on the worst circumstances, he doesn't see them as a burden.
